  Sapporo

Sapporo Hokkaido's booming capital of Sapporo is Japan's fifth largest city, and the transport hub of the island. It's a pleasant, vibrant place, surrounded by mountains that served as the location for the 1972 Olympics. There are abundant parks and gardens and the city has an easy-to-follow grid-plan layout. Sapporo is best known for the beer brewed here since 1891 and a visit to the handsome late-nineteenth-century Sapporo Brewery is a must, as is a stroll through the gardens and museums of the Botanical Gardens, dating from the same era. Try also to fit in a trip Sapporo's best attraction, the Historical Village of Hokkaido, a short trip from the city center.
Pleasantly cool temperatures tempt many visitors to Sapporo's Summer Festival (July 21-Aug 20), which features outdoor beer gardens and other events in Odori Koen, the large park that cuts through the city center. This is also the main location for the fabulous Yuki Matsuri (snow festival) held every February, which draws some two million visitors to city.
Within Japan, Hokkaido is well known for its dramatic and unspoiled scenery that includes active volcanoes, large lakes and vast virgin forests. Within Hokkaido, the capital city of Sapporo is known for its unique history, striking natural beauty, and relaxed character. Many attractions unique to Sapporo contribute to the popularity of this well-planned city. With a population of 1.8 million, Sapporo is Japan's fifth largest city.
